A meditation for when life is unfair

The other day something unfair happened. Really unfair. It sent my mind spinning into a mix of chaos and anger. The harder I tried to let go of the thoughts, the more my mind latched onto them. You know the types of thoughts...

This needs to be fixed.

They shouldn't be treating me this way.

This isn't right.

I can't believe this is happening.

It's a merry-go-round from hell. Rapid cycling with no off-ramp. The last thing I wanted to do was meditate. What was that going to do? It wasn't going to fix the situation. It wasn't going to make the situation suddenly fair. But I did anyway.

The problem didn't go away, but it reminded me that I'm not alone in my suffering. When life is unfair - it starts to feel personal. What did I do to deserve this? Why is this happening to me? Why does this always happen to me? We forget that pain is a part of life. Life is unfair. Not in the cliche way we use to invalidate our feelings. In the profoundly true way - bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. The best parents lose their children. The most dedicated employees lose their job in a recession.

Life isn't about trying to escape the pain. It would be a futile effort even if we tried. It's about learning how to keep the pain from overshadowing the good in our lives. Here is a meditation if you're struggling with the unfairness of life.

Sending light and love.
